July Graduation Activities
Inwelle Study and Resource Centre Maid Strong Report
As usual, we engaged in skills acquisition and building the capacity of our young school to give quality education. The journey is arduous as we are trudging through it with very inadequate funding. The school held its second graduation ceremony in July for nursery and junior secondary students. Inwelle Centre continues to make Computer skills acquisition a great part of the students’ learning. (See Photos)
Inwelle Study and Resource Center and Skill Acquisition 2023 summer camp was held from August 8 to 31August. The camp consisted of variety of activities, including games, arts and craft, dance, academic subject mastery and marketable skills. A total number of 21 young people aged 8 to 17 participated in the camp and they were divided into groups, each group with a facilitator who oversaw the activities and helped to ensure the safety of the children.
Inwelle Study and Resource Center Skill Acquisition summer camp 2023 was a great success. The students were engaged and entertained during the summer camp, and they learned a variety of new skills. The camp provided a safe and supportive environment for the participants to explore their interests and make new friends. The coordinator and camp officers did an excellent job of leading the activities and ensuring everything went well. We are greatly looking forward to the next year summer camp.
According to one of the facilitators, “The 2023 summer camp was awe-inspiring program for me and for the participant. The participants were precisely taught various marketable skills, they participated actively, and they learnt new things”.
Another participant testifies, “The summer camp participant the summer camp was a life changing experience for me and I was able to witness the joy of seeing young people engaged in activities that were not just as a way to keep children occupied during the holidays, but activities that provided a platform for personal growth, learning beyond the classroom, physical and mental well-being, and the building of lifelong friendships. The children were simply thrilled just to be in the compound and relate with their classmates and even young people from other neigbouring schools. Another facilitator states,
“The summer camp was indeed worthwhile. It was very innovative and educative. The learners participated actively and acquired a lot of skills which will stand the test of time. The children acquired various skills which will help them in future. The excitement in the faces of the children was indeed palpable. I’m glad I was a facilitator of the just concluded summer camp.”
A BRIEF OUTLINE OF THE SUMMER CAMP AND THEIR LEARNING OUTCOMES.
The activities spanned from academic subjects, skills acquisition to pure enjoyment.
MATHEMATICS
The participants were taught to identify and to count whole numbers and to use place value to write whole numbers and identify the place value of a digit. They learnt to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and decimal numbers
They were taught to use number line and practical resources to support calculation. They were taught HCF—Highest Decimal factor and were able to solve problems on highest common factor. They were taught Fractions -- numerator and denominator--, number of shaded parts and the number of equals parts in in a shape (circle, rectangle), identifying a fraction by comparing the number of shaded parts to the number of equal parts. They were taught Mixed Fractions, how to convert improper fractions into mixed numbers.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING
The participants learnt reading comprehension, writing, grammar, informal letter, and the joy of poetry reading. The activities promoted critical thinking, Learning of comprehension techniques, appreciation of literature. The participantslearnt how to apply critical thinking to improve reading ability, they were exposed to the techniques of reading required to become active readers, able to engage the reading text and maximize comprehension.
They learnt types of literary work: novels, drama, poetry, how identify and explain some of the figures of speech in poems, how to relate the poem to the real life. They were exposed to some Nigerian writers’ work. They were also exposed to the pure joy of popular school children poetry—rhymes, rhythm, and meaning. They enjoyed Mr. Nobody, Tyger Tyger, and My Mother immensely. They memorized some of the poems and recited before the group to the enjoyment of the audience. Apart from this activity’s potential to sharpen the brains of the children, it added the joy of self-esteem to the reciters as they heard themselves applauded and generated the hunger of poetry recitation in the participants.
COMPUTER SKILLS ACQUISITION
Computer skills acquisition received the lion share of the camp activities as the parents clamoured for computer skills acquisition for their children since all the state and national exams are computerized. :
The were taught keyboarding and basic typing skills, editing and saving on the computer system, how to create, edit, save and print documents, how to include documents with lists and tables, how to formats texts and to use styles. The learners were able to perform documentation and presenting skills, they became proficient in using windows, word processing and Microsoft Excel, open new and existing document, able to copy and paste text and also to use the undo and Redo function.
The learners were able to type, edit, and save a short composition about themselves on the computer, using Microsoft Word. They were able to design a magazine. They were able to copy articles from online and paste in Microsoft word, split the article into three parts in one page add picture on the article, and insert picture from online in case there was no related picture on the article they designed.
HOME ECONOMICS
The different activities carried out under Home Economics were identifying different types of homemade cleaning agents and their uses/purposes, ability to prepare homemade cleanings agents
The students were able to identify the chemicals used and list the steps involved in the production of homemade cleaning agents. They were taught garment making—a few garment making techniques, the technicalities involved in creating women and men’s wear, and how to stitch and develop understanding related to different women and men garments.
They also taught about foodand different types of food eaten, the importance of eating food, the importance of healthy food preparation and applying this new knowledge into their healthy eating lifestyles. They learnt how to make peanut.
They were taught about house hold pest—identifying and controlling these household pests.
They were taught Paper Work- Making flowers with papers and cardboards. They made beautiful paperwork’s and were very happy
ARTS AND CRAFTS
The participants engaged in Paper Art. They were taught paper art and craft techniques, the different tools and materials used in paper art and craft and how to use them effectively. We hope that this activity helped the participants to develop their creative thinking skills through paper art and craft, learn how to generate innovative ideas, experiment with different designs and colors and express their unique personality and styles through their ability, help them develop their ability to manipulate paper, folds it accurately, make precise cuts and adhere small details.
CULTURAL DANCE:
We bought an array of cultural dance instrument. The participants were taught the rudiments of a famous cultural dance, the Igba Atilogwu dance. They will build on this training as time goes on in order to perfect it and participate in state and national cultural dance competition. Our hope is that these participants will dance in a world arena one day.
SPORTS:
We hope to make volley ball our signature sports for all Inwelle International Academy of Excellence students. The facilitator taught the participants how to serve a volleyball, how to strike the ball. They were divided into teams. The learners served volleyball and played against each team.
