Food insecurity: a growing challenge in Haiti.

By Marie Marthe Saint Cyr | Executive Director

The Center for Plantain Propagation has been a core solution in the production of plantain in the artibonite region known  for its "banan Miske".  The latter is a type preferred or its size, taste and texture.  Plantain is eaten at breakfast lunch and diner in Haiti, indeed a main staple in the diet of children as farina (dried and powdered), as porrige eaten at night;  as part of the entree boiled and eaten with meats. When plantain stated getting a fungus it was a major disaster, CPP introduced the FHA21, a type of plantain resistant to the disease Sigatoka.  When FHA21 took hold in the area, it  impacted life for consumers, merchants and producers.  Their economic activities changed for the better.

This is the work of the CPP and over 250 producers, partners who live in the region.  CPP is a project of the Lambi Fund of Haiti.  The CPP has made a difference in the market of plantain in the region by eradicating the grave concern of Sigatoka.  CPP is continuing its impact by strenghtening organizational capacity of the local organizatrions, through training on building collaboration and cooporative.  It supported the production of plantain chips that is in the market and is locally sold in the school yards of many learning institutions.

The last drought, named the worst in 35 years by the United Nations, was a major threat to any production in Haiti. During this time of severe reduction of production, CPP produced 30,000 plantain seedlings, 8626 new fruit trees that included Mango Cheries lemon nuts, apple cedar and mahogany. With the raining season upon us, new trees are permanently placed in gardens to produce fruits, plantain for consumption in the local market.

The vision of self sufficiency can become a reality for the CPP as there is interest in the agricultural sector including small family farmers and institutions who expressed interest in generating the new plantain type and CPP is producing new seedlings upon request.  This is one of the strategic solutions that Lambi Fund through CPP brings to expand the local food production in Haiti.the population.

We have succeeded with your help, your generous contributions and your support.   We thank you.
