Increasing food production in Haiti has gotten more challenging. In addition to the lack of infrastructure and the lack of government support to farmers, is an extended drought. This year rural farmers faced a drought of seven months unlike what they have seen before. For those dependent on the river bed for irrigation, the river beds are running dry, the soil is parched and the green leaves are turning to a grayish compound of dirt and thirst. Seven months also mean a barren harvest for bean growers, okra, corn, and so many legumes that are part of the daily staple for each Haitian family.
The Lambi Fund intitiated the construction of 20 cisterns; with a positive response, we completed 30 cisterns in the most hit areas of the Northwest. The provision of water is essential and the captage of water for multiple uses is just one way of bridging the gap when there is not adequate running water. The other is to expand capacity to store grains for seeding and for additional food. Although we have supported grain storage but a network of growers has been initiated for the purpose of strengthening their capacity of production but in addition to develop and support the capacity advocate for the necessary policies to counteract the impact of climate and already very resource communities.
Your support has been integral and essential to provide water. It assisted in expanding the potential to provide more water through involving community dwellers to become their own advocate for long term strategies to respond to the life threatening impact of the long drought. The network will empowering farmers to move to solution in collaboration. It allows them to focus on demanding the input of local policy makers and bringing national attention to the devastating impact of this specific climatic change. The change in rainfall is slowly redefining how farmers will cultivate food and how nations will respond to this level of deprivation of water and the impact on food production. This is a true challenge for survival.
Your support in carrying the message and your generosity to create a response is not only appreciated but critical as we reach to each other globally. Thank you for making this important work possible.
