A Wining Combination For Expanding Food Production

By Marie Marthe Saint Cyr | Executive Director

Members of Moje Planters' Association "OPMO" have arable, fertile land for agriculture, but suffer from low rainfall, which reduces crop output. In order to increase agricultural productivity in this area 150 members (50 female and 100 male) have partnered with Lambi Fund to irrigate 30 acres of land and to reinforce a community credit fund for farmers. The credit fund will provide more farmers with access to affordable loans to purchase tools, seeds, and inputs needed to increase crop productivity, while thepurchase of two mobile irrigations pumps will water fields from nearby rivers.

All these efforts are undergirded with training on credit management, bookkeeping, sustainable agriculture and organizational capacity building with an average attendance of 34 persons. 70 members of the organizations have received micro loans. The utilization of the irrigation service has not only benefited 42 members, there are an additional 8 community swellers whose fields have been irrigated and watered due to the service the community organizers of OPMO have established.

They have irrigated 13 acres of land and has an additional revenue of HTG21,719 during these months of operation. Their project is slated to be fully sustainable in 24 months. For OPMO and their community, irrigation through motorized pumps and community micro credit has been a winning combination for expanding local food production in a time of constant challenge the nation faces in climate change, politicalinstabilty and drought.

Your generosity and your support has made the work possible and OPMO is well underway to manage and support their members to meet their agricultural goals as well as providing  for the basic needs for their families.

Thank you.
