The Live & Learn in Kenya International community members are not just a bunch of people working somewhere - anywhere... They are a vital part of an extended family. The parents of the children who are on the Live and Learn in Kenya International sponsorship program pay absolutely nothing - monetary - for their children's education. Living in the poorest possible conditions in the Nakuru slums, these parents and guardians are mainly casual workers earning about 2 US dollars a day. They would never have been able to send their children to school. So much has to be taken care of by the parents - from school uniforms, shoes, books, and school supplies - to the necessary fees. Breaking out of the vicious circle of poverty is impossible without assistance. That is what Live and Learn in Kenya is there for - to provide all that is necessary for their children to receive the best possible education that Kenya has to offer. Parents gladly take on the responsibilities of farming the school's 2-acre rented field, caring for and harvesting the crops - and cooking the meals and cleaning the education center. THE CHILDREN SEE WHAT THEIR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS ARE DOING FOR THEM ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS. This has nothing to do with begging and the parents know their worth in the organization. They know how important each and every individual is to the organization and that they are a spoke in the wheels that are providing an excellent education for their children. That is something to be proud of - and the work that it takes to tend the fields, harvest, cook, and clean is almost always done in a joyful way - sometimes even with songs and jokes. The Live and Learn in Kenya International parents are the role models that they are meant to be - strong, sufficient, hard-working, and team members in a huge family!
