Not only do we have to work "Harambee" - hand in hand for a common goal - so do the parents and children!
Parents do their Live and Learn in Kenya community work by cleaning, mending, planting, weeding the fields, harvesting, drying the beans and maize - and cooking. The Live and Learn in Kenya Kids do their share (besides learning all that they can in class!) by weeding and watering the school garden and planting and caring for the trees, flowers, and bushes with their teachers.
Community work is so very important - not only because it saves an immense amount of money to do all this work among the LLK community and not have to pay people to come and do it - but especially because of the noble fact of everyone knowing that they are thus able to "pay back" what is given to their children and to the children themselves. Our parents and children are able to go through their days with their heads held high knowing that they are not "begging" or getting a free hand out - they are all a part of it all! That in itself is empowering to all involved.
We are hoping to be able to buy a field of our own so that we needn't pay rent for the fields that we are using now. Dreams can also be plans :)
We are proud of our Live and Learn in Kenya community of parents, children, teachers, and staff.
Asante sana - thank you so much for helping to make this all possible.
