Planting the Fields in Hope of Rain

Live & Learn in Kenya Int'l parents planting seeds
There is always a risk when it comes to investing in seeds for planting maize and vegetables. The amount of sunshine in Kenya is fabulous for growing crops as long as there is enough rain to go with it.
Sorry to say, during this season we were only able to rent one single acre of farmland to grow maize and vegetables for our Live and Learn in Kenya International children. The usual 3 acres were too expensive for us this year - but we are hoping for funds to be able to rent more farmland and for seeds to be able to plant more. Because of the coronavirus food supplies are down and we will really need a lot of financial support to fill our food stockroom before the children return back to school again.
The Live and Learn in Kenya International parents' groups work hard to do their share by clearing the farmland - planting - weeding and harvesting. They are a diligent group of people wanting to pay back what is being given to their children in the best way that they can - working the fields - cooking and cleaning at the Center.
Asante sana - thank you so much for your kind and generous support!

Farmland

Growing Our Own Food
We have the many helping hands of the project children's parents who are so happy to be able to "give back" by working the land. But of course, we also have the older children who come to the Education Center on Saturdays and during school breaks for meals and sports, activities and tutoring. They are also more than happy to be a helping part of the Live and Learn in Kenya community. Giving back is an important aspect - one that should be taken very seriously. It gives the children and their parents the self-confidence of knowing that they are not "just being helped" - but are being given a helping hand to learn to help themselves!
Preparing the field - planting the seeds - weeding - watching the plants grow - harvesting - these are all learning experiences for our children. Knowing that your own two hands can make the difference between going hungry and going to class with a full tummy is a lesson in life that every child should enjoy. Besides that - the fact that taking part in the work and being a part of a community that enriches not only your own life but also those around you is not only important for the children to experience but also for their parents.Harambee - joining hands for a common goal!
So, our goal is to be able to go on growing our children's food - and watch them grow stronger and more self-confident every day.
This is how a dream turns into a goal - and a goal turns into reality!
Asante sana - thank you so much for caring.

Buying Farm Land - Just a Dream?

A warm meal is a SMILE in the making!
Buying farmland - what a dream that is... It has been our dream for quite a few years now. The idea of not having to pay rent for the small plot of land that we have been renting to be able to grow at least a small part of the crops that we need to feed the children at the Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center. For €5000 (about $5600) we could buy a nice-sized plot of land and be more self-sufficient. A small school garden for the younger children to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, berries, and herbs would be a wonderful and fun way for them to learn how to help themselves at a young age - and how things grow at all.
So, our goal is to raise the funds to buy a neighboring plot of land - or at least a plot of land close by - and for the seeds and fertilizer - and for a water tank so that the land can be watered.
This is how a dream turns into a goal - and a goal turns into reality!
Asante sana - thank you so much for caring.
