Dear Friend
The COVID-19 pandemic is having a devastating post-effect on the lives of children, girls, and young women all over the world, and it is the worst economic, social, and health crisis of our lifetimes and more so to people living within the informal settlements.
In Kenya, the government lifted the last remaining COVID-19 restrictions, which included a ban on large indoor gatherings such as religious services and political rallies. The economic recovery remains a major challenge for the majority of people living in informal settlements. During these school holidays, a large percentage of our afterschool center's parents are still unable to afford basic two meals per day for their children, and the majority of teenage girls are at risk of engaging in sex for food.
Our Small solution trough your help.
Our Center is now a safe place for adolescent girls, where they can actively and meaningfully participate in activities related to their own programming. Such activities include, but are not limited to, dancing and mental health dialogue sessions guided by a professional psychologist. Management of menstrual hygiene.
Since January, our students have had access to porridge at the center whenever we have classes.
Currently, during our school holiday, young people who are involved in various activities in our center have been able to access two meals (morning porridge and a worm nutritional lunch) within the space six days a week.
All of our food is prepared by advanced students and coordinated by our staff. We use the cooking process to teach because most of the students take turns caring for each other, which teaches empathy.
Our Change Stories.
7-year-old Jane (Our Student at project Elimu) My mother is always away during the day, so I come to Project Elimu to play and eat with my friends.
Peter's mother works as a casual house cleaner and does not have a steady income; she spends most of her time looking for people willing to hire for a daily house clean; she claims she is not concerned about Peter's safety while she is away because Peter spends all of his afternoon at the Project Elimu Centre.
We are now looking to set up a much more sustainable plan for the parents on various income generation activities thanks to your continued support.
