First visitors to library #8 in Berlin-Treptow
Lilipad Friends,
We hope you are all doing well and keeping healthy.
We are pleased to share exciting news with you.
On 24th of June we officially opened Library #8 in Berlin Alt-Treptow. We are happy to welcome 40 new children to our community who will be able to enjoy the library space that our team redecorated, the multilingual books that we provided the facility with, and the numerous workshops and events that we have planned for them. We have extensive expansion plans, and we intend to open at least 4 new libraries in 2022.
#1 of 4 is already a fact.
In our biggest library Berlin-Britz we were able to run 3 Rap Workshops with our partners from Refuge Worldwide. During the workshops, the children learned the basics of hip-hop (such as singing to the beat), wrote their own rhymes, and recorded themselves to a beat provided by Refuge. The outcome was great, and we are looking forward to organizing such workshops in the rest of our libraries.
In Berlin-Marzahn we organized a Fairytales Retold Workshop with 20 kids from the community. They all gathered to listen to a story told by Stefan, one of Lilipad’s volunteers. We gathered a lot of learnings from this one and we are excited to host more of these events in the future.
Moreover, we have planned a few photography workshops for all the Berlin locations.
In Morocco-Casablanca, Samira, who is our librarian since August last year, conducted a lovely hands-on workshop on the environment and recycling. Some of the topics discussed were: "what is the environment, what is pollution, how does it affect the health of people, and how can we preserve the environment?" The children and Samira worked with many materials that pollute the environment and found constructive ways to transform them into art. Furthermore, Lilipad provided the library with 2 new laptops and a TV which will be utilized during their learning activities.
In Uganda-Jinja, Ana, one of Lilipad’s project coordinators, visited the libraries earlier this year. She spent invaluable time with Moses – our local champion there and Winnie – Lilipad’s librarian. Together they went shopping for the library, fixed connectivity issues, made the library space more comfortable, and worked on facilitating training and workshops for big groups of kids.
The local teachers, the children, and their parents shared with Ana that they believe that our libraries are beneficial for student learning which confirms that our activities are supporting our mission statement: to improve children’s lives by promoting a culture of reading and the love of learning.
On a different note:
