The 2018 Academic Year is Wrapping Up...But Not Our Work!

Getting ready for arts & crafts time in 2nd grade!

Our students have had a phenomenal school year! They've been successful in their academics, enjoyed our new covered sports field (even during the rainy season!), and showed amazing resilience after the devastating volcano eruption. As they are preparing for end-of-year exams and activities, our staff is also preparing for summer school, which runs during the break of November and December.

We've learned that our summer school programming is vital to the success of our students. It helps them maintain the progress they made during the previous academic year, and has them in a great position to progress as they move into the next grade. It also provides them with an important and meaningful way to spend their time during the break, as well as nutiritious food, clean water, medical care, and mental health support.

We are so proud of the work we do with our students, and of the time and effort our dedicated school staff provides. But we know that we would not be able to do any of this without you and your generosity. It is our wonderful network of donors and supporters that really provide the foundation upon which we're able to build this awesome work.

We're Half-Way Through the Academic Year!

Students back from mid-year break, back to work!

Our students have just returned from their mid-year break to start their classes again! They are motivated and excited to be back in class with their teachers and friends!

Our teachers are also excited to have their students back, and have plans for the second half of the year that will ensure our students are receiving the type of quality education they need to be successful adults and responsible, ethical citizens.

One of our recent volunteers recently told me how impressed she was with the quality of English instruction our first year elementary school students were receiving. It was obvious to her that these students would be fluent in English by the time they graduated, opening even more doors to opportunities previously impossible to to them.

We are proud of the education we provide our students; we're also proud of the other support we are able to provide. Things like high-quality nutrition, mental health support, clean, filtered water, a covered sports pitch available in any type of weather for exercise, medical care, scholarships, and citizenship workshops all combine as we work to support the development of the whole person that our students bring with them to EFTC.

As you know, all of this work and all of these services require a significant amount of time and resources. We could not be successful without the incredibly generous support of donors like you. I hope you will consider donating again to our project, and that you'll spread the word to your friends, colleagues, families, and other networks. Hope in Jocotenango: Term 2 begins!

The school year has well and truly begun!

Recently students at EFTC´s school, The School of Hope, in Guatemala completed their exams for the end of the first Unit. Milestones such as these are amazing to see how our students are thriving and succeeding! Without your generous support we could not provide our students with the holistic support needed for them to overcome the odds stacked against them and break the cycle of poverty.

EFTC´s first ever campaign on GlobalGiving has provided us with the much needed funds to ensure our program continues to provide the support these children deserve but would not have without The School of Hope.

We are only just a little over $7,000 USD short of our current goal for this campaign. Every little bit helps us get one step closer to our goal and has a huge impact here in Guatemala. It is because of your support that our students learn about the world, gain the skills they need to move into gainful employment, learn how to improve their community and have the time and the safety to be children for a little longer. A privilege often taken away too young in Guatemala as children move into the informal workforce often at ages as young as 5 or 6 years old.

This first term here at The School of Hope was filled with innovative classes, new after school clubs for our students, preventative health workshops, Sexual Education classes, Financial Literacy for our older students, we also celebrated Carnival (a huge holiday in Guatemala!) and worked to educate our students not only with the knowledge they need but the values of our Foundation. Check out the photos attached below to see the students who excelled in the "values of the month" for honesty and commitment, as well as some highlights from Carnival and class time.
