More Books Being Written

By Alison Hendry | Project Administrator

Thank you for all you have contributed towards AIL’s goal of educating the people of Afghanistan. While the conditions in Afghanistan are still challenging, AIL is seeing positive changes in the lives of those Afghans that it works with.

We are excited at all of the positive changes being reported by the AIL staff in the area surrounding the public library that AIL is establishing in Herat. What was once an area filled with begging and drug use, generally avoided by the public is now a public space where families take walks and many citizens come to learn. The people of Herat are excited and thankful for the library and the benefits it is bringing it to their community.

In addition, AIL has recently published 30 copies of a handwriting workbook written by an Afghan teacher. This teacher realized that during 30 years of war and strife, the art of teaching proper handwriting and calligraphy had been lost and was seeking to share his knowledge with others and so decided to write this book. The manual has very good examples of proper calligraphy, and then space for the students to practice writing underneath. AIL is currently seeking $4,000 to print enough copies to distribute the workbook to all of its centers for use in teaching writing. With your help, they will be able to meet this goal and share this great resource with more teachers across the country.

Don’t forget!  The holidays are a great time to share your passion for AIL and the great work that they do! GlobalGiving offers gift certificates which can be used to donate to AIL’s projects. Also, beginning December 1st, the initial donation made by recurring donors will be matched 100% by GlobalGiving. There is only $25,000 available in matching funds, so help AIL take advantage of this opportunity early!
