Songbooks and libraries

Dear Friends,

Last month AIL took delivery of 1,000 songbooks and 200 teacher guides. These will be distributed to Learning Centers for use in classes. It can be a challenge for some centers to have enough different literature for students to read, hence the importance of onsite libraries. AIL provides books to students whenever it can and works to increase the number of libraries. Here is the report from one library:

“The Professor Sakena Yacoobi High School has a big and full time library. It is dedicated for students of the school. Hundreds of students come to study in this peaceful library. They do their homework assignments, projects and research work given by teachers . In addition, all the students of the AIL Learning Center in Sofi Abad are allowed to study in this library and connect to the world through the internet access.”

The Citadel LC has access to the Gowhar Shad Library which is in the same historic complex. That library is supported by AIL and is very popular. In the first 4 months of the year there were 2,084 visitors including 1,000 women.

AIL has started the year 2016 with a full roster of education classes in many subjects as diverse as, literacy, English, carpet weaving, computers and physics. In the month of January, there were 9,682 students (6,132 female) in classes at 42 Learning Centers (LCs) in Afghanistan and 1 LC in Pakistan. The health program has provided 19,226 patients with treatment and given health education to 11,854 people. Here is a story:

“My name is Somayeah and my twin sister is Masomah. We live in a poor family and we are both interested in learning, but we always missed the chance to study because people were laughing at us. Fortunately AIL’s teachers promoted self-confidence and self-esteem in us with great advice. Now we are happy and no longer ashamed. Our minds changed since attending AIL’s literacy and sewing classes. We also found out about the dignity of women in the community and we are proud to be twins. We also made very good educational decisions about our future.”

Your donation will help AIL continue its valuable work providing education and healthcare, emergency relief and legal aid to poor Afghans.

AIL is changing lives every day. In 2015, a total of 22,096 (14,616 female) students attended classes at AIL Learning Centers in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The classes offered vary from site to site depending on the community requests. They can include English and computers together with the perennial favorites of literacy, math and sewing. AIL is also promoting Afghan culture by providing lessons in carpet weaving, tile making, miniature painting, calligraphy and many other traditional Afghan crafts. One popular class is Mobile Literacy where students start out with little knowledge of reading and many end up reading at 4^th grade level in only 4 months!. A recent class of 30 female students that finished at the end of September had results of 25 students reading at 4^th grade and 5 at 3^rd grade level by the end of the course.

Here are the words of one student, "My name is Latifa. From the day that I joined the Mobile Literacy class I felt a big and observable change in my life. In this class in addition to reading and writing we learned about new technology. On the first day, we were excited from the moment our teacher started teaching as we got how interesting it is. Now I can read and write and also I can message to my family and friends."
