Aid provided to Flood Victims

By Elizabeth Appleyard | Program Officer

Dear Friends,

We are delighted to let you know that an AIL project has been selected as one of only six projects in the GlobalGiving Girl Fund! The project is 921 Afghan Institute of Learning Empowers Afghan Women. This project will receive one sixth of the donations made during the rest of this year to the special fund!

We would not have been selected for this opportunity without the support we received in the month of March from many donors such as yourselves. Great team effort! Thank you!

Project Update

AIL’s emergency fund was pressed into service in early April when excessive rains caused the river near Herat City to overflow its banks.  The flooding affected six districts of the city. Three of those districts have AIL Learning Centers and families in those communities were affected.
Communities have been hit by river flooding but also by the water logged ground being so saturated that wells have backed up and flooded houses far from the river itself.

AIL’s focus is on education and health but when communities in which AIL works are affected by disasters then staff get involved and use emergency aid funds to buy oil, rice and beans to distribute to needy families. A food kit for one family consists of 3 liters oil, 7kg rice, 7kg beans. In the first distribution, AIL was able to assemble and distribute kits to 510 families. AIL staff member said, “It is a bad flood and many people were affected. We gave out food kits and everyone was very grateful for the help.  We want to keep providing aid as it will take a while for these families to get back on their feet.”

Thank you for your support.
