Emergency intervention to save animals in zoos

The continuation of the armed conflict in Yemen, and the deterioration of the humanitarian, economic and social conditions, have negatively affected the wild animals that receive care in the industrial reserves, as a result of the lack of available capacity to meet the increasing needs, which led to the deterioration of animals, especially endangered animals that need special care in order to remain on Alive .

SORD's interventions cover a fraction of the zoo's emergency needs, unfortunately because we are still in the process of raising funds that we are still unable to provide for the full service to conserve the remaining endangered animals such as the Arabian leopard. The animals and the garden were provided with water, some vaccinations, hygiene and food for 20 Arab tigers.Unfortunately, the emergency needs of the Taiz Industrial Reserve, according to the working administration’s statement, exceed $392,000 to cover the minimum period for a year. Unfortunately, the possibilities are decreasing and the needs are increasing, which has led to the death of animals, especially endangered animals that need special care to survive.

For example, on Friday, June 25, 2021, the number of the Arab tiger decreased to 36 in Taiz Park, due to the death of one of them inside the cage as a result of the lack of food and health services that keep it alive as it gets less than half a meal per day.

It is really unfortunate, the wildlife in Yemen is threatened in a very large way, so we are waiting for your donations, no matter how small, they will have a great impact to preserve what remains of the rare endangered animals. They do not speak and do not know why they have missed care, medicine and food . They complain in silence. They are the animals of Yemen, in general, and of Taiz's zoo, in particular, which have been affected by ongoing conflict. They complain about their condition every day, sometimes with roars and anger ... and at other times with wailing and howling, without human attention to their talk. Despite the latest Arab newspapers are full of news of refugees and families destroyed by wars, but these animals trapped in death zoos, no one pays attention to their suffering in zoos in Yemen, after they lived a starvation war worse than human wars more than six years ago. Pictures of lions, tigers, Arabian leopards and other animals appear in a tragic situation, and their bodies emaciated and symptoms of illness appeared on them. The zoo houses hundreds of animals that have been suffering from neglect, forgetfulness and abandonment since the start of the country's armed conflict in March 2015. The war in Yemen contributes greatly to the deterioration of the conditions of Taiz zoo as a result of neglect, lack of care and lack of food, which has made many animals fight a battle for survival. Taiz's zoo is crumbling, cages are small, and lions, leopards and monkeys are fighting a battle for survival in light of food shortages and chronic trauma. The zoo in Taiz has now become the focus of the courageous rescue efforts made by few organizations through their campaigns, which aim to provide assistance to these rare Arab animals that are imprisoned in cages. Sanid Organization for Relief and Development (SORD) is one these organizations. With its limited resources, SORD tries to provide Taiz zoo with the essential access to food, water and vaccinations. In fact, the needs of the zoo covered by the government, organizations and SORD are only 30% which means that 70% is still a gap must be provided. Otherwise the animals of Taiz Zoo will continue be suffering.
