Dear Friends of YOUPSA,
We hope you enjoy this brief update, stories and photos about our work. Since you last heard from us, a lot has happened! Schools in South Africa re-opened in mid-January. The children were so excited to start the YOUPSA programs this year.
In rural South African schools children rarely have the opportunity to learn about and experience problem solving. What a great joy it has been for them to have the time, space and materials to build their problem solving skills by using a beautiful wooden Tetris puzzle! They just didn't want to stop.
We also introduced many Grades to musical hand instruments and allowed them to experiment. The kids that YOUPSA works with have no exposure to musical opportunities. YOUPSA uses music and instruments to build listening skills, sense of rhythm and coordination, and to improve group dynamics.
Can you imagine the excitement of making a mask for the first time? Each child chose a different animal they wanted to be. They were so proud and happy to have the opportunity to make their very own mask and wear it. Those who are normally shy to speak began speaking more openly and confidently during our language-building activities when they were wearing their masks.
Thanks to your kindness, these and many other exciting activities that ignite the inner spark in children will be possible this year!
We've also been raising awareness about YOUPSA's need for a more suitable vehicle, so that we can continue to bring our programmes to the remote rural schools. Our current vehicle is a 2007 sedan on its last legs! If you are interested to know more about this story, please look here: Vehicle project.
We'd love to hear from you!
Warm regards,
the YOUPSA Team
