Safe Spaces for Children Impacted by Peru Floods

Our Puerta Pulache school is complete! The five classroom building was completed mid-October and was handed over to the community in a fun-filled ceremony. The building was built to withstand earthquakes and flooding, providing a safe space to hundreds of children for years to come.

Yapatera is the location of the new school rebuild, a remote village in the district of Chulucanas. The two building school will hold three classrooms each with WaSH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) facilities for both. In order to maintain the safety of the students and the classrooms a retaining wall is being built to prevent mudslides and landslides. As with our other school build in Puerta Pulache, the buildings are designed to be both earthquake and flood resistant. A total of 147 students are currently enrolled in the school but must study in Temporary Learning Centers because the buildings they once were in are destroyed. The goal is to have the buildings completely finished come the start of 2018 so children will be able to learn in a safe and secure classroom at the beginning of the year.

Our response program in Huarmey came to an end in July after mudding out over 150 homes and sanitizing 18 schools. We were also able to demolish over 40 unsafe homes and structures as well, ensuring that families would not be living in conditions that could be dangerous. Our work in Peru is far from over though as our team has identified small communities in other regions asking for our help in the recovery process.

In Puerta Pulache, a small rural town in Piura, flooding and mudslides damaged many homes and buildings, including the primary school that 325 students attend. All Hands Volunteers saw the immediate need in this often overlooked town and is building 5 classrooms to replace those that were destroyed by the heavy rains. The new classrooms are government-approved, and earthquake- and flood-resistant. Classroom furniture will be provided, and we are also building new bathrooms and installing a new waste water system.

While local contractors built the steel structure, volunteers have been mixing concrete, installing the floor and building the bathrooms, beginning by creating the septic tank and drainage system, installing the plumbing and laying the foundations and bricks.

To date, 121 volunteers from 21 countries have given 11,445 hours to build the new Puerta Pulache school.
