The Little Ones Need a Place to Learn and Play: Building a Day Care Center at The Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center in Nakuru, Kenya
Live and Learn in Kenya International, a non-profit registered NGO, has dedicated itself to providing vital educational opportunities to children in need. Serving some of the most impoverished areas of Nakuru, Kenya—including the Ronda and Baruti slums—the organization strives to break the cycle of poverty through education. At the heart of this mission is The Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center, situated just outside the Baruti slums to ensure easy accessibility for the children it serves.
Over the past 18 years, this education center has grown from a single classroom into a thriving educational hub. Thanks to the unwavering generosity of donors and the tireless fundraising efforts of Live and Learn in Kenya International members in Germany and the USA, the center now comprises 11 classrooms and workshops, a kitchen and dining hall, an administrative building with offices for a project manager and two social workers, a day clinic, and a library. These facilities have transformed the lives of countless children by providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning and growth.
However, there is an urgent need to further expand. A single classroom was repurposed to accommodate the youngest learners—children aged 3 to 4 in need of daycare. This temporary solution has now been rendered insufficient due to a new mandate from the Kenyan government requiring that daycare facilities have a separate, purpose-built building. This regulation ensures that young children have a safe, dedicated space where they can learn, play, and thrive, free from the disruptions of older students.
Meeting this mandate is crucial, not only to comply with government regulations but also to provide the best possible start in life for these little ones. Early childhood education is a cornerstone of academic success, as it lays the foundation for cognitive, emotional, and social development. For children living in extreme poverty, access to quality daycare is more than just a convenience—it is a lifeline that enables their parents or caregivers to seek employment or education while ensuring the children receive proper care and stimulation.
To achieve this, Live and Learn in Kenya International must build a dedicated Day Care Center at the education center in Nakuru. The project will require significant financial support, as the organization relies entirely on donations to fund construction efforts. The timeline is urgent, as every day without a proper daycare facility places these young learners at a disadvantage.
By contributing to this cause, donors will not only help meet government requirements but also play a vital role in shaping the futures of these children. The proposed Day Care Center will provide a safe, child-friendly environment equipped with age-appropriate learning materials, toys, and furnishings, ensuring that the youngest members of the community have the resources they need to flourish.
The Live and Learn in Kenya Education Center has proven time and again that collective effort can create profound change. Now, it calls on compassionate individuals and organizations to help build this Day Care Center and give these little ones the safe, nurturing space they deserve. Together, we can continue to transform lives, one child at a time.
