Towards a Better Future: Progress and Challenges
The "Towards a Better Future" project has made significant strides in supporting Ukrainian refugees in Romania. This initiative adopts a holistic approach, addressing a hierarchy of needs to ensure comprehensive support for the beneficiaries.
Achievements to Date
The project has successfully conducted a variety of activities aimed at integrating Ukrainian refugees into the Romanian community. A total of 32 workshops and integration events have been organized, providing essential support to 150 Ukrainian mothers and offering capacity-building workshops to 194 teachers. These efforts have directly benefited 1,437 children aged 4 to 18 through a range of interventions.
In terms of educational support, the project has equipped 246 children with the necessary tools and equipment to attend school full-time in Romania. This has been a crucial step in ensuring that these children can continue their education without interruption.
Digital skills development has also been a key focus of the project. Five digital skills workshops have been conducted, and 37 youth aged 13 to 18 have been equipped with tablets. Additionally, 21 laptops have been ordered and paid for, with delivery expected in early 2025.
The project has dedicated significant efforts to fostering integration within the host community. Language courses have been organized for 46 Ukrainian children in coordination with local authorities. Furthermore, seven intercultural sports events have been held, benefiting 750 children, and five non-formal educational activities have been conducted in four schools across Suceava County.
Support for teachers has been another critical component of the project. A total of 194 teachers in seven schools and local institutions have been equipped with the necessary tools, mechanisms, and strategies to support Ukrainian refugee children within their school environment.
The project has also extended support to EDNAE, the only Ukrainian female-led organization in Suceava County. This support has included assistance with work integration programs and mediation with county authorities, translation services on a need-by-need basis, and covering rent for six months for the association headquarters. Additionally, the project has covered rent for the football pitch for the Ukrainian football team for three months and provided sports equipment for 32 Ukrainian children who are part of the football team.
