The Riley Orton Foundation and the Sunflower Foundation have partnered since 2016. Together we have built a shower block, set up a grey water system, employed extra teacher and provided student resources from books to sanitary pads for Akili School for Girls. We have also been helping establish the Literacy Garden for girls in poorly resourced government schools.
In both contexts, the girls participate in “Sustainakility”, (named for the sustainable farming and the Akili School for Girls, which is where it all began), aims at making students healthy by engaging them in smart farming and teaching them healthy living practices.
This year the orchard trees fruited for the first time and pawpaws have already been harvested for the school students and for sale whilst the girls were on holidays. Pawpaw fruit is extremely rich in vitamin c and also has a wide range of health benefits like boosting immunity, lowering cholesterol and helping to ease menstrual pain.
Mangoes and oranges are ripening, and the girls can look forward to good nutrition in the coming months.
The Literacy Garden is back in full swing for Term 2, and their first Girls’ Empowerment Program will be held in the coming weeks.
This is the last newsletter I will write for you. My role has been taken over by Evan Lorendo, who with his wife, Linda Deng, have taken over leadership roles for the Foundation. Through their generosity, we have been able to resuscitate the Foundation and educating girls. Linda and Evan will be living in Tanzania, working with NFPs, so you’ll be receiving reports from the ground.
My thanks to all who have supported us thus far. You are the ones we depend on.
Warm regards, Kim Power
