Economic Rehabilitation of Survivors of Violence

By Baitaly Ganguly | Executive Director

“I won’t forget that day when I was abducted and deceived by my next room neighbour, Mr Tarun Sardar at the age of 14. Now I can easily realize that he took advantages of my family’s poor economic situation, our six-membered family had no land and a little earning to sustain ourselves. Tarun was able to convince me to leave with him and later handed over me to another trafficker named Shukla Singh in Delhi and finally sold me to the brothel. I was abused physically and mentally every day & had to suffer to the worst possible.i was rescued from Delhi and I finally returned, to get back to my family with Jabala’s support but was stigmatised by the community members and returned to the shelter home of Jabala.

I was counselled frequently and then exposed to cultural activities by Jabala. I felt vulnerable and knew the necessity of security, I wanted to do something productive in this field . Thus Jabala facilitated to cultivate my interest and I received various functional skill development trainings which assisted me in being placed in a renowned Hotel as House Keeping Attendent with dignity and an earning of Rs 6000 per month and regain my self-esteem and dignity. Later, I got an opportunity to change my job and got promoted to senior House Keeping Attendant within a few months.

I am much more confident now and can earn my own living.

There is always a choice and I have made mine, to be self-dependent! I thank you all for helping me out in this journey."

Khushi Sardar (a girl from Hathhuba, Habra, North 24 Parganas)

All identities of the rescued victim are changed due to privacy policies.

Support is always crucial and 'You' deserve all the credits—there are many more miles to be covered and Jabala knows she is not alone

Rehabilitation of the survivors means to restore them to a useful life or a better condition, through quality care, counselling cultural & sports inputs, education, health support, income opportunities and social security. Jabala through its Economic Empowerment(EE) program incorporates building sustainable livelihoods, improving financial and household decision-making strengthening household assets and increasing household economic resilience.
