In mid-September 2018, Category 5 Super-Typhoon Mangkhut moved westerly across Guam, China, and the Philippines causing widespread devastation and casualties. In the Philippines, one of the most vulnerable nations in the world, farmers in North Central Luzon province were hardest hit--rice and corn fields were destroyed, soils and vegetation were eroded, and roads were washed out. To assist communities affected by Typhoon Mangkhut, Peace Winds in collaboration with a local NGO, Citizens Disaster Response Corps (CDRC), initiated relief and recovery efforts. Together we distributed food, clean water, basic necessities, and hygiene kits to 2700 households. Peace Winds and CDRC also worked to restore road access, reopening nearly all roads by the December 2018, as well as replanted most rice and corn crops that were damaged or destroyed. Although Peace Winds has wrapped up its work in Luzon, CDRC continues to provide basic necessities, food, and water to families transitioning from temporary to permanent housing. To continue its work as well as prepare for future disasters, CDRC is working to recruit and train volunteers.
Peace Winds America and the CDRC greatly appreciated your support to help families and communities recover post-Typhoon Mangkhut.
