Newsflash: Dr. Yacoobi  is one of BBC 100 Women 2017! 

Learning Centers (LCs) in Kabul and Herat play a crucial role in providing educational opportunities to disadvantaged men and boys in small communities. So far in 2017,  22,203  students (7,380 male) have attended 6 month courses at  44 LCs in various locations. In addition to regular classes in academics, computers and other subjects all students at LCs are taught fundamental life skills such as health information, peace education and leadership.

Leadership is essential to every society. If there are no leaders then there is no government which leads to insecurity and chaos. Economic, political and educational and cultural activities decline.  Leadership skills training whether in regular classroom setting or in special intensive workshop formats have always been part of AIL’s program.  The training builds the capacity of the youth. They learn how to voice their opinions and take leadership roles. Sessions start with explanations of what a leader is, the difference between leadership and management and how to build self confidence in leadership. Communication skills, knowledge of social justice, politics and democracy are all covered.

One student said, “I learned that everyone can be a leader. I learned how to express myself and treat other people who are competing with me. I gained self- confidence. Leadership concerns influencing others and helping them be more capable so they can handle conflicts. I will be able to use these skills in my life.”

In 2017, AIL has provided 176 people (39 male) with Leadership Workshops adding to the leadership skills knowledge they gained in LC classes.

Dear Friends,

There are male students at most of AIL’s Learning Centers and there are 3 centers that have exclusively male students.  Two of these are in Herat province and 1 is in Kabul. The Kabul center does computer classes for boys. There are 14 boys in the class at present and they are studying the Excel program.

The class needs two more computers and has asked AIL for help. The manager also reported that some families were not supportive of the students but he spoke to them and explained the benefits of education and how this would help their sons get jobs and learn other skills.

One boy said, “We talked to our parents and explained about how useful this class is. We did the best we could to make our parents feel happy about us doing the class. It will improve our lives and our society too.”

This was a successful talk and the parents are now feeling good about the class. The students have asked for an English class to be held as well. Some AIL centers have joint English and computing classes available.
