Hello from Zanzibar!
It's winter here in East Africa, which means it's still hot....just not as hot as normal! We're in the process of wrapping up another round of short courses and we're getting ready to start a new set of courses for our exsisting students and the 20+ new students we will welcome into the program in September. Since our last update we've had a lot of excitement in the computer classroom. We're currently teaching both Beginning IT and Intermediate IT and the competition for the fastest typist at Welcome Ideas is heating up. In addition to the IT classes, we've been opening up the computer classroom for IT Lab which has been bringing in students through-out the day, on weekends, and even on holidays. The students love having access to the computers and have been using them for school, for their small businesses, and for other various extra curricular programs. Some of our other courses have also started to utilize the computer classroom for various lectures, like Tourism & the Sharing Economy. Students in our Intermediate IT Class have also each designed a logo for their small businesses. These logos are now incorporated into their Income & Expense Statements in Excel, their mail merge letters to clients in Word, and their business proposal presentations in Powerpoint. All of us, especially our students, continue to be so grateful for this amazing resource that you have so generously helped make possible.
Today, I am excited to tell you that after a long wait we are finally adding high speed internet to the computer classroom (and all of the classrooms) at Welcome Ideas. Just this morning, workers from the local telecommunication company put up a pole and fiberoptic cable to connect the school to the internet. Thanks to your generous support we have been able to have this installed at the school to give our students access to web design, email, research, and all of the excitement that the internet has to offer. All of our classes, not just our IT curriculumn will be enhanced thourgh having high speed internet and it will make teachers and administrators jobs much easier.
We can't wait to send you pictures of the students using the internet as they design websites for their small businesses, research projects for class, and email potential clients and investors as they build their small tourism businesses. Thank you for your generosity and for making all of this possible for our students.
Kind regards,
Kenn
