JOEE Hopping and Hoping

By Ruth Gilmore Ingulsrud | Founding Director of JOEE.jp

Halloween Party at the Orphanage
Halloween Party at the Orphanage

How is JOEE faring during the pandemic? Still hopping along with four lessons taught every week at St. Francisco Children's Home in Ota-ku, Tokyo. Most of our lessons are taught via Skype from my puppet-strewn basement studio, but about once a month, we are allowed into the orphanage to conduct an in-person lesson. These are joyful times with bubbles being blown, balls being thrown and dancing being done with exuberance. Masks must be worn at all times, of course, but this does not dampen the enthusiasm of our little learners.

Most of our fundraisers had to be canceled due to Covid-19 restrictions, but we are looking forward to one event on November 10 at the Embassy of Mexico in Tokyo. We have reserved a large enough room to accommodate 30 to 40 members of the International Ladies' Benevolent Society who are interested in JOEE's work at orphanages in Japan. We have a slideshow and presentation planned and will bring the puppets and props needed for a sample demonstration lesson.

JOEE is hoping to find more monthly donors and possibly even corporate donors as we move forward to reach out to more instutionalized care homes. Already we have heard from homes and individuals around the world who are using free online JOEE lessons to help teach English to small children. Find the lessons on YouTube by searching for the channel labeled "Ruth Gilmore Ingulsrud" or by clicking on the following link:
