Thank you for your support of Save the Children's U.S. Border Crisis Children's Relief Fund! Here are some updates on our recent work at the border:
OVERVIEW
Save the Children has provided humanitarian assistance to children and families seeking asylum at the U.S. southern border since 2014. We’ve prioritized programming for families traveling with children, with a special focus on the youngest children, pregnant women, new mothers, and children with disabilities.
Our work at the border centers on strengthening the capacity of shelters and communities to protect children and families, addressing their immediate physical and emotional needs, offering resource support, technical guidance, and children’s programming and advocacy. Since the start of our response, we have set up child-friendly spaces for children in shelters run by nonprofit agencies; distributed large quantities of care supplies to children and mothers on the move; and supported medical services.
Recent activities included funding and training 11 dedicated Children’s Coordinators working in 14 shelters, aiming to enhance the well-being and safety of children in these facilities. The training sessions, numbering seven in total, were designed to build capacities in crucial areas including child safeguarding, psychological first aid, and communication strategies tailored for children, particularly those with disabilities. These efforts were part of a broader strategy to create a more supportive and secure environment for children and their families seeking asylum.
RESULTS
We were able to reach 131,333 children from July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023 through 27 shelter partner organizations. Welcome centers and shelter partners helped 61,000 children in Texas, 29,864 in California, 21,150 in Arizona, and 18,464 in New Mexico during this program year. Our financial assistance supports our partners in providing food, water, safe shelter, medical care and referrals, legal information and representation, clothing, hygiene items, and access to a warm shower.
Through our Cash on the Move program, we provided cash assistance to help families safely reach their sponsors or family members at their final destinations in the United States. In total, we distributed 3,029 cash cards, reaching 4,967 adults and 4,851 children.
LOOKING AHEAD
Looking ahead, we will continue to prioritize our border response in 2024. Support from donors like you is vital to our success, so we thank you for contributing to our U.S. Border Crisis Children's Relief Fund.
