The New Leaders!

By Karina Martin | Director

Deaf community in Zimbabwe often face a lack of access to education, employment, and social opportunities. This can leave them feeling isolated from their communities and without the skills and support needed to lead and participate fully in society.

Last month Nzeve provided training and sensitization to three Deaf clubs in Zimbabwe, a total of 93 Deaf individuals.  The goal was to enable Deaf leaders to independently run their clubs and choose sessions that were relevant to their communities. Nzeve provided the clubs with different templates and samples of practical activities to help them with their leadership roles.

Prior to the training, the clubs struggled to organize and run activities independently. They often relied on outside support and lacked the skills and resources needed to be successful.

However, with the training and support provided, the clubs are now able to take on a more active role in their communities. The club memebers are now able to plan and execute their own activities, including social events and business ventures. This newfound independence and sense of ownership over their clubs has been empowering for the deaf leaders involved.

In addition to the practical skills gained, the training also had a positive impact on the clubs' confidence and sense of self-worth.

One youth attending the training said:” I now know how to choose a venue, and find a topic and information to lead a Deaf club. Now when we want to discuss something we can organize and lead a session when we want to, because we have new skills.”

While there are still challenges to overcome, the success of this project demonstrates the potential for future success in training leaders in Zimbabwe's Deaf community. With continued support it is possible to break down the barriers faced by the Deaf community and empower them to take on leadership roles and participate fully in society.
