Counselling session in progress
Counselling session in progress

Voice of Women Uganda has continued to support women through counseling, referral and accompaniment. More women are responding to the call to come out and report any abuse paused to them either by their husbands or any other member of their communities in one way or the other. More domestic violence cases including beating, intimidation, verbal abuse, marital rape are continuously reported to our office on a daily basis and VOWU counselors have attended to them. Other violations such as denial of access to family property, failure to provide for the family, refusing women to work among others have been reported and handled. There have also been several cases of girls who have been pregnanted and thrown out by their boyfriends.

We have sent out appeals to women through text messages, social media and community outreaches to come for counseling. In the period November, 2020, to January, 2021, 41 women and 4 men have reported their cases to us and received counselling, referral and information. We mobilized women to participate in activities to mark 16 days of Activism campaign against gender based violence which started on November 25 (International day for elimination of violence against women) and December 10 (Human Rights day) 2020 under the theme: ‘Women’s Safety and Wellbeing’. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the need to observe the SOPs, community engagement activities have been limited. For regular updates about our work, visit our facebook page at: www.facebook.com/voiceofwomenuganda and our website at www.vowu.org

In order to enhance information sharing, we are in the process of compiling information which we will develop into a resource directory of services and service providers. We think that this will be useful in our referral process and also will increase knowledge of women on where to get immediate help when they are confronted with situations of abuse.

We are very grateful for the donation(s) that we have received from you through the globalgiving platform. We would like to let you know that the struggle is not over, we still need to raise $3,434 to meet our target of $5,800. It is our hope that when this project is fully implemented, victims of violence will be empowered to free themselves from abuse, survivors will be more aware of options and support services available and be able to make use of them.

I want to take this opportunity on behalf of Voice of Women Uganda management to convey our gratitude to you for the generous support.

We are also very grateful to GlobalGiving for vetting and awarding us a Badge.
