Summary

On January 7, 2025, two massive wildfires fueled by extreme environmental conditions tore across Los Angeles, California leading to the mass evacuation of almost 200,000 people. Within days, the Palisades Fire in Pacific Palisades and the Eaton Fire in Altadena caused the total destruction of homes, businesses, and neighborhoods. With so many facing such unprecedented loss, the road to recovery will be a long, complex and overwhelming journey for the most vulnerable of those affected.

Challenge

The wildfires reduced 18,000+ homes, schools, churches, and businesses to ash and rubble, destroyed 12,000+ residential properties and displaced tens of thousands of residents who will require health & social services, housing solutions, and economic opportunities. Local nonprofits, coordinating the high demand for emergency assistance, will require a surge of trained outside responders to fill gaps in services as community needs evolve over the long recovery timeline.

Solution

All Hands and Hearts (AHAH) mobilizes volunteer-powered labor into disaster zones. In LA, we are supporting local nonprofits' direct cash assistance programs, so affected individuals and families can cover basic daily living expenses, so day laborers who just lost their jobs have access to work opportunities, and to fill the need for volunteers at community distributions centers.

Long-Term Impact

AHAH has made a 12-month commitment to support LA's recovery from the fires. Our work will address both the short-term and evolving needs of those who have lost their homes in partnership with local organizations embedded in the affected communities. Our activities will address community priorities and the changing needs on the ground. Longer-term, our experience in construction and fire mitigation strategies may be called upon.
