Summary

Helene, the strongest storm to hit Florida's Big Bend coast in recorded history, made landfall on 26 September as a category 4 major hurricane, before leaving a 600 mile trail of unimaginable destruction across Georgia, Tennessee and the Western Carolinas. In the Asheville, North Carolina area, residents remain cut off from first responders, without power, cell service, and are quickly running out of essential supplies like food, gas and drinking water. The need for rapid response is urgent.

Challenge

Intense, sustained rainfall from the storm led to catastrophic flooding across the mountainous southern Appalachian region leaving surrounding towns under water, buried in mud and debris and in some cases, "100% destroyed". Overwhelmed communities dealing with a rising death toll and hundreds more unaccounted for, are just beginning to grapple with the massive destruction and local organizations will require tremendous outside support to meet their community's near and long term needs.

Solution

With your support, All Hands and Hearts can deploy and sustain its proven model of disaster relief, providing "people power" to the most vulnerable in affected communities in the greater Asheville area. Our trained staff and reliable, service-oriented volunteer teams actively seek opportunities to plug into locally-led efforts, working together with local partners to provide direct relief for individuals and families and build community resilience alongside those who know the community best.

Long-Term Impact

In response to Hurricane Helene, All Hands and Hearts has announced a 12-month commitment for a large-scale, long-term U.S. relief program in the heavily damaged Asheville, NC area. We are providing 4 months of debris cleanup and stabilization services and plugging our volunteers into community distribution sites before transitioning to 8 months of critical home repairs. We expect to impact 300+ families, 800+ individuals with a cohort of 30+ volunteers per month over the 12-month program.
