Chimpanzee welfare at Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary
The sanctuary has maintained the health and welfare of the 52 chimpanzees in its care. The new menu rolled out in 2022 has seen great improvement in the general health of the chimpanzee population. Freshh food are procured from local markets and availed to the chimps fresh. The sanctuayr has also been growing its own vegetables after setting up a evgetable garden at the sanctuary. The elderly chimpanzees are given multivitamins on a monthly basis to boost their body immunity.

To further inprove their welfare, new chimpanzee playing platforms were erected in the chimpanzee holding facility to provide enrichment to the chimpanzees when they return to nest in the facility in the evening. We also continue with the routine enrichments like hay for their hammocks, figs and toys to enhance foraging for food, etc.
The chimpanzees were monitored by the veterinarian and caregivers for any signs of illness and injuries. Over the last 3 month, we have registered 19 minor injuries. This is an increase comapred to the last quarter and are attributed to the tensions and fighting in the community in competition for mates, hierarchy, and food.
The staff were provided new uniforms and personal protective equipment as needed.
The chimpanzee structures have also been renovated and the sleeping area is undergoing major renovations and reinforcements after over 20years. The steel panels are being replaced and the floor redone. This expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Other routine activites have been maintained.
