With the help of 16 returning and new tutors we were able to provide ESL classes to 19 refugee women over the course of two semesters. Through our collaborations with organizations like the Connecticut Institute for Refugees and Immigrants (CIRI) and the Yale Refugee Clinic we have expanded our reach beyond New Haven to refugee women all the way in Fairfield County! Over the next few semesters we aim to continue this trend and expand our client base into greater Connecticut.
This summer we had incredible demand from the community for our ESL services and had to actively recruit and train over five new tutors. Tutors receive refugee education and cultural competency training prior to teaching. We emphasize sensitivity and empathy to foster cross-cultural exchange and new friendships. Elena’s Light values volunteerism from those who share our vision to provide equity of opportunity to all members of our community.
