SOTENI has joined with UNICEF and other partners as an essential contributor to the Kenyan Government’s nationwide campaign to accelerate COVID-19 vaccinations, specifically in Bungoma County. This campaign was initiated this past year with intent to bring vaccines closer to Kenyans by establishing mobile vaccination sites in public places within villages and in rural communities. SOTENI’s Village of Hope in rural Mbakalo became a designated COVID vaccination center and administered it first vaccine on January 26, 2022. As of September 12, this SOTENI clinic has vaccinated 1,135 community members.
The current COVID-19 accelerated campaign aims to vaccinate Kenya’s entire adult population by the 2022 year-end with a focus on youth and remote populations. Given our experience fighting HIV/AIDS in Kenya for nearly twenty years, SOTENI is now well positioned to address this global pandemic efficiently and effectively. We are honored to be part of a community health solution once again and are grateful to our supporters who sustain us in this live-saving work.
The success of SOTENI’s partnership in Kenya’s COVID-19 campaign can be attributed to our established and reputable relationship with the Bungoma County Ministry of Health, which is responsible for campaign oversight. In addition to providing vaccinations at our Mbakalo Clinic, medical professionals from the Clinic have conducted over 10 community outreach events to date this year! The extension of the Clinic permitted vaccine access to remote members of our community. SOTENI’s AIDS Barefoot Doctors have been a vital resource in dismantling stigmas and misconceptions regarding vaccines in Mbakalo, deploying years of transferable experience in HIV/AIDS education.
SOTENI’s service provision has been especially timely as Bungoma County experienced a COVID-19 surge in July. During that month alone the Clinic vaccinated over 800 clients from the community. In addition, the Ministry of Health expanded the vaccination target population to youth from 12 to 15 years of age. Again, because of our extensive experience working with HIV-positive individuals, SOTENI Mbakalo was adept at expanding its reach and access to this segment of the community.
Thank you for your continued support of SOTENI’s efforts to ensure that some of Kenya’s most vulnerable and under resourced people continue to receive healthcare and social services. These interventions are essential to preventing and mitigating the effects of infectious diseases including HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. Because of your generosity, SOTENI remains a resilient and an effective partner in providing solutions.
Thank you!
