Tailoring: A Small Business Skill for Afghan Women

As schools have been shut down by the installment of the new government in Afghanistan, education is being lost as women from grade seven up to University are no longer allowed in schools. This dilemma also causes hand to hand motor skills to be loss aswell, like sowing, writing, reading, also communication skills, talking to fellow classmates, understanding literacy, speaking other languages.

AIL seeks to empower these women and give them an equal chance, just like the boys have with eduaction. AIL staff hold womens workshops, were these women learn and aquire various skills and thoughtful education that are used in their day to day lives.

These workshops can be various different skills such as : sowing, crafting, learning technology, basic nutrition , literacy work and so on. These workshops are held by our prominant AIL staff and very well respected teachers from highschools and Universitys from various different parts of the country. Many of these workshops holds up to 10 to 50 women begging to be let in for their determination to learn.

Learning to sew helps women succeed in life and build a more hopeful future for themselves. A woman who has a tailoring qualification can make clothes for her family and friends and set up a home business sewing for others. 

AIl provides in person tailoring classes at Learning Centers. The length of sewing course varies from 3 to 9 months depending on what level of tailoring is needed. AIL has  also begun providing sewing machines for students to use at home if they are unable to attend a class in person. They can follow programming that teaches sewing on TV Meraj.  There are also useful videos on Youtube that help women advance their tailoring skills.

Women gain self-confidence and a belief in their own capacity to learn when they acquire a useful skill like sewing.  They also gain the respect of the family for their skill and their capacity to earn money.
