Saving Lives at Birth in Kawempe amidst COVID-19

Project Report | Apr 28, 2022
Saving lives at birth quarter one, 2022

By Harriet Babikako | Project Lead

Reporting period Jan, Feb, March 2022

Child and Family Foundation Uganda (CFU) team are delighted to share another progress report on saving lives at birth in Kawempe and Kamuli amidst covid 19.

Partnerships

CFU works in partnership with the surrounding neighboring health Centre (IV) offering maternity and delivery services that she profiled to support in case of critical care. These include KCCA and Mulago referral hospital.

Purpose

The main purpose of this report is to share CFU's concerted efforts on continued fundraising for an ambulance as a key missing asset in the struggle to save lives at birth.

To share how the project has impacted and saved several lives during birth, CFU implemented activities.

Implemented Activities (output indicators)

The CFU medical center together with CFU SACCO designed and operationalized a health scheme and availed it to 201 mothers attending the antenatal care (ANC) clinic. The main purpose of the scheme was to help pregnant mothers plan to cover the costs of delivery at a subsidized cost. The scheme allows mothers to cover ANC, delivery, and postnatal costs at subsidized prices in installments.

Supplies and drugs were procured including a 01BP machine, 01weighing scale, and 50MUAC tapes to support 201 pregnant mothers during birth in a bid to improve maternal health thus sustaining and improving lives.

CFU referred 00 cases to other health Centre’s/hospitals in a bid to improve maternal health and save lives

Impact indicator

As a result of continued information dissemination and sensitizations during outreaches, VHT referrals of pregnant mothers seeking ANC were noted at CFU Medical Centre

09 mothers were safely delivered at CFU medical Centre though the major challenge noted was the difficulty for the mothers to reach the health Centre due to lack of transport or an immediate ambulance in one of the cases an ambulance was outsourced to ensure safe delivery.

CFU Medical center services

CFU was able to offer a variety of services to pregnant mothers in the ANC clinic. The services that were offered include TB/HIV screening and testing, nutrition assessment, obstetric scan, and dispensing of routine drugs such as dewormers and Fansidar.

CFU Activity plan for next quarter

In a bid to promote and improve maternal and child health amongst vulnerable communities in Kawempe, CFU will continue to engage several stakeholders in fundraising activities that can result or raise funds for the procurement of an ambulance thus solving the transportation challenges faced by mothers.
