2022 Recap & How a Cookstove Helped Maria's Family

By Jennifer Jones | Director of Donor Relations & Communications

Thank you for helping provide safe, energy efficient cookstoves to families in rural Guatemala!

      2022 Safe Cookstove Totals:

  • New Safe Cookstoves Installed: 22
  • # of Adults benefitting from new Safe Cookstove: 66
  • # of Children benefitting from new Safe Cookstove: 132

In 2022, HRI distributed and installed 22 new safe cookstoves. These stoves created safer and healthier living environments for 66 adults and 132 children. They also saved the families time and money since they require much less wood each day than an open flame fire.

Maria's family was one of the families who benefit from a new stove in 2022.

Earlier this year, Maria and her family of 4 needed an Energy Efficient Safe Cookstove to improve the health and safety of cooking in their home. Maria and her husband have 2 young children. When she used to cook, the smoke would fill the kitchen space. Inhaling the soot-filled smoke caused continuous respiratory infections for Maria and her children. Their lungs could not manage the smoke.

With a new safe cookstove recently provided by HRI, Maria's family will not only have clean air to breathe, but they will also use much less wood which will save time and money for the family, as well as help with deforestation. The safe cookstoves are much safer as well as they don't have an open fire with flames shooting up.

Maria’s husband is a day laborer, working in several farms just to make enough to put food on the table, so purchasing a safe cookstove was way beyond their ability. Thank you for helping us provide this family (and many more) an energy efficient safe cookstove which will improve their health and safety throughout 2023 and for many years to come!
