New Year, New Communities and New Stoves

By Kimberly Lagomarsino | Director of Programs, Latin America

It's a new year and our team has hit the ground running working with new and existing communities in our programs. We are excited to have 2 new communities joining our work and we are looking forward to making progress with them on their journey to better health, nutrition and opportunity.

We have already established a school breakfast program in each new community to ensure that children start the day out right with a nutritious meal before school starts. Through your generous donations we have also been able to provide each community with a safe, energy efficient cookstove to aid in the preparation of breakfast each day. The communities are very enthusiastic and grateful. They took the lead organizing transport of the stoves out to their respective communities and getting the stoves set up. Since these schools are small and do not have adequate school kitchens, each community decided to install their stove in a home close to the school and this is where breakfast will be prepared for the children. This means that all the mothers who take turns helping to prepare food for the school children will begin to learn how to use this type of stove and will immediately benefit from not cooking in a smoke-filled kitchen.

As more people experience these safe, energy efficient stoves, we are helping to shift the norm away from dangerous and laborious open-fire cooking. Cooking school breakfast is just the start and with your help we look forward to expanding the initiative to more homes and families in 2020!
