The Ballymena Rotary 10 Virtual marathon took place over the weekend of 18-20 September 2020. Members had arranged for their 'marathon teams' to undertake their 10000 steps in a way that best suited their individual circumstances. Although most chose to walk, others combined their challenge with a game of golf or bowls.
Teams carried out their activity in various locations - from Sligo to Portrush, from Antrim to the Shetland Islands, from Ballymena to Donegal. All teams respected 'social distancing' guidelines and they were able to undertaken their contribution to the marathon at a time which suited them best. Although the aim had been to complete the equivalent of 10 Marathons the numbers who took up the challenge meant that the equivalent of around 20 marathons were completed!
The availability of GlobalGiving was an essential element in the success of the project. This was the first time the Club had used an Online giving tool. Those making a contribution found the donation process straightforward and the receipt and 'thank you' arrangements were particularly efficient - with the facility to 'tailor' thank you notes in a very personal and Club related way. Taking account of Bonus earned and Gift Aid Recovery the project raised almost £3000 online.
Four local charities benefited from the Virtual marathon - Samaritans, St Vincent de Paul, Salvation Army and Turning Point NI. Representatives from the charities were invited to a Club Zoom meeting on 1 December. They each outlined the benefit which a donation of £750 would bring to the organisation. Clearly all four organisations have seen a significant increase in demand for their services during the pandemic. At the same time as demand was increasing the ability to fund raise was reducing. The formal presentation of cheques was made on 3 December and all four charity representatives expressed their sincere appreciation for the ongoing support from the Rotary Club of Ballymena.
The President and members of the Club very much appreciate the contribution made by so many and we can be confident that the four charities will put the funds to good use as they continue to come to terms with the impact of the pandemic on those who use their services. Thank you!
