Report on Relief Efforts for Families Affected by Flooding in Rwanda

Dear Patrons,

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to you and the GlobalGiving disaster response team for your unwavering support towards the Relief for Families affected by Flooding in Rwanda project. Your generosity has been instrumental as we strive to aid those most impacted by the devastating floods that struck Rwanda in May 2023.

The floods ravaged communities, destroying over 5,100 homes and affecting an additional 2,500 households. Tragically, more than 130 lives were lost, and many others were injured as homes collapsed under the force of the floodwaters. This disaster exacerbated food insecurity among hundreds of farming families, necessitating urgent intervention.

Our baseline assessment highlighted food security as a critical issue, prompting local leaders to recommend immediate distribution of food packages to the most vulnerable families. Additionally, essential home supplies such as bed covers, mattresses, and hygiene materials were identified as urgent needs. Reconstruction of flood-resilient shelters emerged as a priority, given the extensive damage to housing infrastructure.

In response to these pressing needs, RWAYDAVO has mobilized volunteers to provide comprehensive support. Our efforts have included distributing emergency disaster relief, comprising food and essential supplies, to families grappling with the aftermath of the floods. Furthermore, we have implemented home-to-home counseling sessions and training sessions on disaster management, flood prevention, and control.

As part of our long-term strategy, we are also initiating environmental interventions such as tree planting to mitigate future flood risks. Vegetation will be strategically planted to absorb excess water and prevent overflow into vulnerable communities.

To date, RWAYDAVO has assisted 43 families, impacting at least 295 individuals. However, our goal is to reach 2,000 people across the affected regions. We appeal to your generosity to support our mission by donating generously to our project. Your contributions will enable us to continue our vital work and expand our reach to more families in need.

We encourage you to share our project link on social media and consider making a recurring donation to sustain our ongoing efforts. Your continued support is invaluable to us and the communities we serve.

Thank you for your unwavering support thus far. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those affected by this disaster.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Jean Damascene Uwizeyimana
President, RWAYDAVO
