Michael's Story

By I Live Again Uganda | Communications and Partnerships

"When the war began we were struggling to find food.  We went an entire week as a family without food.  It was too dangerous to go to our garden.  My older brother went to look for water for us and he was killed by the rebels.  When he was killed, as a family, we lost hope.  We did not see any future ahead of us.

My mother decided that it would be better for me and my other two brothers to go and live with my Uncle.  We started our journey and we were ambushed by the rebels.  We were separated as we all ran in different directions for safety.  I managed to make it to my Uncle's home - but, up to now, I have no idea if my brothers survived that day.

After a few months, my Uncle was killed in the war.  This caused me deep pain.  I had no hope after his death.  He was my last hope for my future.  My only choice was to leave South Sudan and come to Uganda for safety.  Upon reaching here, I struggled with any purpose in my life.

When I Live Again Uganda came to our area in the refugee settlement I did not think I would gain anything.  But after a few days in the counseling program - I have gained hope!  Since my time in South Sudan and even here in Uganda as a refugee no one has taken time like I Live Again Uganda to listen to me, console me and give me hope for tomorrow."

*** "Michael" is a refugee from South Sudan. His name has been changed to protect his identity. ***

Thank you so much for your partnership with us in Uganda.  Uganda is currently hosting over 1.5million refugees.  Your support is greatly appreciated.
