The World Health Organization states that globally, 1,700,000 children under the age of five die each year as a result of water-related diseases; UNICEF asserts that more children are killed each year by unsafe water than by bullets. In fact, 70% of surface water in India is unfit for consumption.
One of the ways in which SevaChild is working to combat such problems is by installing water wells that reliably deliver life-sustaining potable water; so far this year, we have made operational 42 water wells in remote villages where dangerously-contaminated water has presented health hazards for generations. Now, the lives of future generations have been improved with this newfound access to one of the most critical resources for human health. And we are just beginning!
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, SevaChild has received funding for an additional ten wells, the completion of which we anticipate prior to the beginning of 2024. The majority of water wells drilled, erected and made operational by SevaChild have been paid for by those who specifically dedicate the structure to a lost loved one, which is commemorated with a plaque inscribed with a personalized message.
