Clean drinking water is virtually nonexistent in many of Odisha's poor rural villages. Many of the villagers suffer from stomach illnesses caused by drinking contaminated water from old wells that aren't deep enough to reach clean, safe water.
Over the past several months, donors' contributions have paid for two water well systems in two of Odisha's leper colonies. SevaChild has utilized its own funding to pay for two more water well systems in two of the nine rural villages we have earmarked for the establishment of water wells. The inhabitants of some of these villages have to travel as far as five miles to find clean water with which to fill their water vessels, then make the long trek back to their homes. One can imagine how difficult this is -- in addition to being time-consuming, since it needs to be done on a daily basis.
When completed, the water well systems we are installing reach depths where uncontaminated water is accessed. The entire system -- including pump, as well as a cement pumping and cleaning station where dishes and clothes can be washed and baths can be taken -- costs a total of $1,700.00. Every dollar you give brings us closer to building the next system.
