The current level of hunger in Yemen is unprecedented and is causing severe hardship for millions of people. Despite ongoing humanitarian assistance, over 20 million Yemenis are food insecure, of which nearly 10 million are acutely food insecure. The Covid 19 pandemic has further compounded existing vulnerabilities experienced by beneficiaries especially the under-five children, pregnant and lactating women and various operational challenges. According to the UN report, parts of Yemen are seeing their highest levels of acute malnutrition in children which heightening warnings that the country is approaching a dire food security crisis.
Drivers of malnutrition in Yemen worsened in 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic, economic decline, floods, under-funding of this years's aid response have compounded an already bleak hunger situation after nearly six years of war.
However, it is noted, despite these challenges, generous resources by the donors, and efforts by MoPHP, UN agencies, NGO partners and the nutrition cluster coordination team, enabled and facilitated continued delivery of nutrition services in the country including remote locations. The MOHP also highlighted several challenges (logistic, supervision, implementation of services in COVID -19, timely delivery of supplies, delay in payments etc) that were expected to be addressed during the mid-year review.
Sanid Organization for Relief and Development (SORD), as an NGO working in Yemen, tries its best to reduce the malnutrition rate among under-five children and PLWs in Yemen in general and in Sana'a Governorate, in particular, where this project has been implementing : " Save lives 3025 children U5yr & 1,360 PLW in Yemen".
This project aims at contributing to the reduction of mortality and morbidity associated with acute malnutrition to children under 5, pregnant women and lactating mothers in the targeted areas that have high acute malnutrition rates. During the first quarter of 2020, children under 5 and PLWs suffering from acute malnutrition have been supplied with the proper nutrition supplementary. Community awareness have
been raised among the pregnant women ,lactating mothers and Girls of childbearing age regarding the evils of malnutrition, both for child and mother, the importance of good nutrition for the mental and physical well-being, and how to use the available
