We appealed to you after the hurricane in October 2016. Hurricane Mathews was deemed the most devastating storm to hit Haiti in 35 years. As you know we are still recovering from the great earrthquake of 2012 with over half million still in tents. This Hurricane resulted not only in a million more homeless but also in a level of unknown devastation to a much greener south known as the "food producer" for the country.
Our prority was shifted immediately to planting 3222 Kawo (hectare) of land that 1500 family farmers farm. The primary success is in the decision itself to focus on production of food again. The people who dwell in these areas have lost all their farm assets and inventory of small businesses. They cannot afford the cost of import goods once the relief agencies ceized their activities.
Our donor support has allowed the Lambi Fund to assist with two activities. One, the cleaning of sediments and deposits from the inundation, sand and salt elements from seawater that was left on the planting soil. The farmers and community members volunteers to develop clean up team and do a "kombit". A kombit is a mutual activity that depends on volunteers who are themselves the beneficiaries of the activity. Farmers got together and travel from field to field cleaning up the debris and Oxplows follows to turn the soil and is then prepared for planting. Second, Lambi provided the equipment, the tools, the fertilizer, the seeds because you supported us with your generous gifts.
We have cleaned, prepared, repaired and planted our first seeds for the next three months harvest. Many of the fields are sprouting baby eggplants, spinach, calalou, corn, beans, okra etc.. These will go to market in three months curving the lack of food availability in the region. These productions harvested will bring revenue to the farmers for their everyday needs. Currently, the farming community is hurting for their basic needs. They hope for revenue from this first harvest that you helped grow through the seeds and support you provided through the Lambi Fund. Thank you.
