In May we reported on our site visit to hard-hit Busuanga Island reviewing firsthand the ongoing Typhoon Haiyan recovery and the impact our programs were making. Our time on-site confirmed the need for continued involvement and showed that these remote areas remain deeply under-served by the aid community.  Peace Winds America is committed to assisting the people of these areas.

We are pleased to report that PWA has expanded the Busuanga Island Typhoon Haiyan recovery program. Three new barangays - San Isidro, Maglalambay, and Panlaitan - bring our total barangays served to six. In the current program expansion PWA is partnering as well with the U.S.-Philippines Society.

Under the expanded project PWA will provide a host of needed recovery goods and services. To restore livelihoods we are providing  boat repair items (marine plywood, epoxy, nails, paint) and fishing gear such as nets, lines, and hooks. Agricultural livelihood assistance covers a range of items, from animals (swine, chicken, water buffalo) to seeds for rice, corn, root crops, and vegetables, as well as the implementation of a communal seed bank. PWA is also providing farm tools. Throughout, PWA is maintianing a focus on the restoration of the livelihood of the community, not merely individuals within each barangay.

The PWA program is helping these communities prepare for future disaters as well. PWA and our local partner is conducting disaster mitigation education and training, which aids local leaders to understand and  implement programs to make their areas disaster resilient. PWA's partners on the ground are additionally helping leaders form disaster preparedness teams to improve future community-based disaster management.

Without your help we could not implement this program. Peace Winds America is deeply grateful for your ongoing support and hopes your generosity will continue.
