“Is this really our house?”
Zara was born in Al Salaam camp on the outskirts of the regional capital El Fasher four years ago. She has never known life anywhere else. She has heard her parents talking about their home in their village but had no idea what they meant. Her family had fled the village when the Janjaweed attacked it ten years ago. They fled with just the clothes they were wearing. At first they lived in a plastic tent at the camp but then they were able to build a hut and to start some sort of a life, but it was hard. Ahmed, Zara’s father, said “we did not starve thanks to the United Nations World Food Program but we had not land we could cultivate to grow our own food and no animals. My wife became more and more unhappy.”
Today people are being encouraged to leave the camps and to return to villages but many have new people living there and without possessions they have no means to start a new life. This is why Zara was so overwhelmed when the villagers in Abu Nahla offered her family some land and help in building a hut. It is the first real home Zara has had.
Kids for Kids has been providing these new families in our villages with the basic essentials of village life, including goat loans so that the children have milk and mothers have a livelihood for the first time in their lives. Zara, like many other children, at last has a real home.
