Nzeve's commitment to improving menstrual health among deaf girls and young women keeps gaining momentum across all sectors in Manicaland. Our aim is to bridge the gap between the deaf community and vital menstrual health information and resources.
In March, we conducted school visits in Mutambara, Chisuko, Mount Melleray, St. Andrews, Hande, and Manzinde Primary. These visits reached 40 female learners and male students, focusing on essential topics related to menstrual health, hygiene, and sanitary product usage. The sessions were designed to enhance understanding and a practice surrounding menstrual hygiene, covering key aspects such as what menstruation is, the biological and emotional significance for women and girls, and practical guidance on what to do when menstruation begins. We also addressed the proper usage and handling of reusable sanitary products, emphasizing their benefits for both health and the environment.
To facilitate understanding, the sessions were led by deaf mentors who could relate directly to the participants’ experiences. We incorporated visual aids, such as diagrams and videos, to further illustrate concepts and ensure clarity. This approach not only made the information more accessible but also fostered an inclusive environment where learners felt comfortable asking questions and sharing their thoughts.
One participant expressed her gratitude, stating, “During my menstrual periods, I did not attend school; I would stay at home because I was unaware of the situation and felt ashamed that my friends would laugh at me.” Another significant story involved a girl from Hande Primary who faced isolation from her classmates after she began menstruating, as they did not understand what menstruation entailed. However, following the joint menstrual hygiene sessions for both boys and girls, she no longer experienced isolation, and her classmates accepted her once again.
These stories highlight the transformative effect of our program. We are immensely proud of our accomplishments, which have been made possible through your generous support. By providing the deaf community with reusable pads, we are not only promoting menstrual hygiene but also empowering women in meaningful ways.
