HEALTH AWARENESS SESSIONS AS PART OF THE RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Asha, who lives in the Lapala village of Tijara district, makes it her prime duty to visit the Sukarya health camps without fail. Witnessing the personalized care and services provided by the Sukareya team, she soon starts attending the health awareness sessions with much enthuisiasm and hope. After a few sessions she quickly realizes the importance of all the discussions and presentations, the crux of the matter, which is all about breastfeeding. As a young mother it is a life changing learning for her. She makes sure that her son received her breast milk during nfancy, for the first six months.
Among other sessions as part of its Integrated Rural Development Program, Sukarya holds regular health awareness sessions at least once in every month in the villages of Tijara Block of Alwar district in the state of Rajasthan. Pregnant and lactating womenlike Asha from the village community gather and learn about the benefits of breastfeeding their new born children. When questions are asked and apprehensions are cleared in these sessions, feedback are always welcomed. The women learn that a child, in its infancy, needs the most critical care from her mother in the form of breastfeeding for the first 6 months of its life. It is medically proven fact that breastfeeding immensely helps strengthening the immune system of babies and longevity. For families in the villages mother's milk helps in saving costs of buying milk for the kid and also circumvents the effort of boiling and sterilizing. Moreover, in the initial few months when the child is most vulnerable to common viruses and bacteria, the necessary antibodies to develop immunity come from the mother’s milk.
Today, Asha shares her story to other women in her village of how her motherhood was a smooth sail. Her child, a healthy eight-month-old boy now, did not suffer from any diseases and illness as other infants do. Moreover, the boy has grown up to a very healthy weight and height, which is a source of immense joy to his parents. Other women, who have seen Asha’s child grow, gave testimonials on her story. Not only do they understand the importance of breastfeeding today, but also make sure to spread awareness around the issue. Asha today conveys tremendous gratitude to Sukarya for the health of her child.
Asha’s words are no less than a small victory for Sukarya. The envisaged mission of mother and child healthcare taking shape gives immense pride to all of us involved at Sukarya. Hundreds of stories remain to be told and heard, glorifying the hard work of Sukarya team and the depth of the IRDP Program.
