Summary

In rural Kamuli District, Uganda, many girls miss school due to lack of menstrual hygiene products and education. Our project aims to empower 2000 girls by providing reusable sanitary towels, hygiene kits, and menstrual hygiene management workshops. We will also establish local production units/ facilities for pads/ towels to ensure sustainability. By improving menstrual hygiene, we will help these girls stay in school, improve their health, and break the cycle of poverty in their communities.

Challenge

Adolescent girls in rural Ugandan schools suffer from poor Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM), limited access to sanitary pads, inadequate hygiene knowledge, community stigma, and lack of parental support. This forces some girls into early sexual relationships for pads hence increasing teenage pregnancies (24%), STDs, and HIV risk. Poor MHM causes over 30% of girls to drop out due to absenteeism. The high cost of disposable pads and lack of skills to make reusable ones gives rise to this project

Solution

This project will address the problem by supplying 2000 girls with reusable sanitary pads and hygiene kits to ensure effective menstruation management. Educational workshops will enhance hygiene knowledge and reduce stigma. The creation of local pads production units will provide a sustainable and affordable supply of pads. Community outreach will involve parents and leaders, fostering support and these efforts will reduce absenteeism, prevent early pregnancies, and improve educational outcomes.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of this project will be to boost school retention by reducing absenteeism of girls through reliable menstrual products and education. Improved hygiene will enhance girls' health and well-being, Local pad production units will create jobs and stimulate economic growth. Addressing menstrual stigma will promote gender equality and empower girls. Community engagement will foster sustainable support, leading to lasting cultural change and continued benefits for future generations
