Helping Hurricane Harvey Survivors

By Save the Children | Save the Children

A year after the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in over 50 years, children are still recovering from Hurricane Harvey. The emotional distress of losing their homes and access to education continues to take its toll. Children have lost their sense of security and need time and support to heal emotionally and build their resilience.

Save the Children’s Emergency Response Team deployed in advance of the 2017 storm and is still on the ground, committed to supporting the well-being and education of Texas’ children for the long-term.

Committed to the Children of Texas

As the recovery process continues to evolve, so do the needs of children.

Emotional Support: Our signature emotional wellness program, Journey of Hope, has helped thousands of children and the adults who care for them cope with loss, fear and stress. We are collaborating with Texas Children’s Hospital, Communities in Schools, DePelchin Children’s Center, the University of Houston, Lamar University and Mental Health Associates of Southeast Texas to roll out the program across the region.

Return to Learning: As a national leader in early childhood education, Save the Children is partnering with Collaborative for Children, local education networks and programs in greater Houston, the Coastal Bend region and the Golden Triangle, to restore and improve child care, early learning, summer and after school services for hundreds of programs.

Prepared for the Future: Save the Children-led programs teach basic preparedness skills to children. When kids learn about the things that can make them feel safe during an emergency, including an emergency plan and how to pack an emergency go-bag filled with essential supplies, they feel better prepared.

Nobody knows when the next crisis will strike, but your support helps Save the Children provide assistance in the critical first hours and days of an emergency when children need us most. Visit www.SavetheChildren.org/Crisis to help.

In partnership with the Hurricane Harvey Children’s Recovery Collaborative and CHILDREN AT RISK, Save the Children highlights the impact Harvey had on Texas children, the current status of recovery efforts, and best practices and recommendations for future recovery efforts in Still At Risk: Children One Year After Hurricane Harvey.
