Since 2015, the internationally recognized
government has been fighting for dominance
in Yemen in a military alliance with
neighboring states and Ansar Allah (also known
as Houthi or Houthi rebels). In the south of
the country, separatist, terrorist and rebel
groups are also involved in the conflict. The
civil war developed into a violent conflict
with international parties. In the past,
ceasefires have been negotiated between the
conflicting parties, but lasting peace is not
yet in sight. The situation in the country is
dramatic. Almost the entire population - 22
million people - needs humanitarian assistance,
according to the United Nations. The most
important infrastructure in the country such as
energy and water supplies are damaged. Many
hospitals are no longer functioning. Food prices
have risen sharply. As a result, 16 million
people no longer have access to clean drinking
water, sufficient food and medicine. Over 7
million people are starving.
Free medical help
In the poorest regions of Al-Hudaydah, Hajjah and
Saada, Lahij and Abyan, the alliance organization
of Aktion Deutschland Hilft, ADRA, offers free
emergency medical aid to around 1,000,000 people.
Hospitals are supported financially and logistically
to save the lives of many people. A total of nine
health facilities will be expanded and receive better
equipment. Among other things, the rooms are adapted
and converted to the needs of people with disabilities.
The electricity supply is largely provided by
renewable energies through solar panels. In addition,
people can also obtain the medication they need
directly from health facilities in specially equipped
pharmacies. Thanks to the installation of sanitary
facilities, water treatment and water purification
systems as well as educational training on hygiene
measures, the general hygiene situation in hospitals
is improving and people are better protected from
cholera epidemics and the Covid-19 pandemic.
Children have a special place in our hearts
Seriously ill children are treated immediately and
receive the best possible care.Children are victims of
the conflict, they deserve a healthy start in their
lives. Malnutrition is one of the most commonly
diagnosed problems. A life-saving paste or emergency
food can help. The paste made from peanuts, oil, sugar and
milk powder gives the little bodies strength again and
they gain weight. Recognized health experts also advise
parents in remote areas on how they can better protect
their little ones from illness.
With the support of partners, our partner organization,
ADRA, is stabilizing the Yemeni health system in the long
term and expanding its capacities. ADRA-supported hospitals
in the north of the country will receive better equipment in
order to be able to treat more people. For example,
ambulances are being provided and the infrastructure of the
laboratories is being improved. In particular, the care of
pregnant women and obstetric medicine should be supported in
this way in order to sustainably reduce maternal and child
mortality. Operating theaters are being renovated and equipped
so that women can be helped quickly in the event of
complications during pregnancy.
In order to increase the performance and scope of medical
assistance measures, 505 medical and administrative
specialists are being educated and trained. Thus, there
is an increased proportion of female specialists,
particularly in the area of mother and child health!
Finally, people and their stories are listened to and
psychosocial support is offered. These measures help to
improve the quality of life of those affected. They build
an important bridge between acute humanitarian aid and
the long-term reconstruction of the country.
